Flash Forward Or Flash In The Pan?

The Vancouver Sun talk about the prospects of ABC’s new hopeful — “Flash Forward”.

And while there’s a chance that Flash Forward may set a new low in sheer awfulness — the new Starlost, anyone? — there’s just as good a chance that it’ll rock. The pedigree is good: Sawyer is involved, as a consultant, I believe, and day-to-day writing and producing duties have been handed to David S. Goyer, the co-writer of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, as well as the next X-Men movie, and Brannon Braga, whose recent projects included Star Trek: Enterprise and 24.

The clips, which were shown Tuesday as part of ABC’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York and streamed online to journalists, looked promising, in that TV-premiere way.

Pilot episodes almost always look good, anyway, even in this economy. It’s what comes next that counts, and we won’t know what comes next for Flash Forward until the late fall. (ABC announced its schedule, but not its premiere dates.)

ABC has given Flash Forward a huge vote of confidence, though, by giving it leadoff batting position on Thursday nights, the most important night of the week from a financial perspective. (All those movie ads for the weekend openings, don’t you know.) Ugly Betty, meanwhile, has lost its coveted leadoff spot and now moves to Fridays.

Flash Forward will lead into Grey’s Anatomy, which in turn will lead into Private Practice.

As for where Flash Forward will end up on the ludicrously complicated Canadian network schedules, not even a sci-fi seer like Sawyer can guess.
