According to DVDTimes, Walt Disney Studios will be releasing the Region 1 DVD of FlashForward Volume 1 on February 23rd, 2010. That’s “volume 1″, as in the first 10 episodes of the season that have already broadcast. The release will be 1 week before the show returns from its mid-season break on March 4th, 2010.
It does seem a bit early for a FlashForward DVD, I must say. Especially when you consider how long fans of other shows have to wait. Sometimes the wait is a good thing, it builds up a sense of anticipation and is usually the icing on top of the cake, so to speak.
That said, the move is not unprecedented and it could be viewed as a smart piece of opportunism. Obviously there’s the monetary incentive; opening up another income stream this early in FF’s run will be good for the studio (assuming the DVD sells well), and could help make those ratings look a bit sweeter. (it could be argued that Dollhouse was afforded an extra season largely on the back of DVD sales and DVR ratings). It’s also another way to bring people up to speed – especially those who have missed some of the episodes and may be undecided over whether or not to get invested. Watching the first 10 episodes of the in succession may draw them in for a few of the new episodes when the show returns on March. Although a marathon rerun could have done the trick.
It will be interesting to see how well the DVD sells. It should also be noted that there are no ‘extras’ listed at this stage, I guess the gag reel will have to wait.
This seems like as good a time as any for a FlashForward poll. Feel free to cast your vote below so we can gauge how popular the volume 1 DVD might be.
